Manufacturing fetishism – correction and retraction

4680

In my article last year on manufacturing fetishism, I wrongly suggested that Denmark had built a successful economy without manufacturing a single car. I am grateful to my friend Rory Sutherland of Ogilvy for pointing out that this is an error. Between 1907 and 1912, the Brems company manufactured 12 cars in Denmark. More recently, the Zenvo supercar, built and designed in Denmark, had a planned production run of 15, although it is not clear how many were actually built after Jeremy Clarkson savaged the car. Over the past hundred years, automobile production in Denmark has therefore averaged around 0.2 cars per year.

I apologise to all Danes and to my readers for this error.
